Do you have a spiritual anti-aging routine?

The world we live in is consumed with a youth culture and aging is considered bad. I’m all for keeping young and strong by taking good care of our bodies with excellent nutrition, exercise and of course a multi-faceted skin care regimen. But I have a question for you…what is your spiritual anti-aging routine?

For many years now I’ve put myself in the environment of healing as well as ministered to others about the lies the enemy implants in our hearts often when we’re young and defenseless, which then in turn create walls and bigger lies as adults. The way we know that we have them is well, we’re all human; there isn’t a single person that hasn’t been affected by sin. It’s kind of like gravity – whether you believe it or not, it just is.

Some of us have more drama and pain in our past from childhood or traumatic events, which makes the walls a little easier to see.  A clear sign to know that these lies or ‘hooks’ are embedded in our hearts is when we get triggered and offended by something or someone, the reaction to which is disproportionate to the offense. This can show up in marriage, parenting, relationships with others and sometimes more subtly, our relationship with God. Often the actual offense isn’t what triggers us, rather a reminder of a well-embedded lie that came from an earlier experience, where we made a judgment about ourselves, others and God. If we hold on to unforgiveness and judgments, then bitterness and resentment follow, thereby making the lies even stronger.

The beauty of God’s amazing love is that He gave us a way through Yeshua (Jesus) to be healed and set free! We can know what these lies are if we quiet ourselves before the Lord, meditate on His Word to hear His still quiet voice and He will reveal them to us!  Over the last several years in my seeking healing from a violent rape at knifepoint that happened in my early twenties, as well as other earlier fearful memories, I have come face to face with lies that i believed such as “unloved, won’t live a long life, not good enough, not beautiful, not talented enough”. Sound familiar? The enemy of our soul goes around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. He uses the same strategies to bring fear, unbelief and mistrust. It is why Yeshua called satan the ‘father of lies’. His ways are old and these lies are found in man since Adam and Eve believed his original lie.

I recently understood deeper, that when that original lie entered into Adam, so did death. We were originally designed for eternal life, no aging or death. I am continually amazed at the goodness of God that even in knowing we would sin, He made a way for us to be redeemed! He gave us a way back to eternal life! He traded our sickness for health, mourning for gladness, our ashes for beauty.

It is well known that our aging not only comes from the outside environment, but it is accelerated by what is inside. In other words, you can try and mask the outside with good skin care, make-up, exercise and maybe even great treatments, but if your heart is living from lies, if you have pain and unforgiveness, it will show through to your face.  Sagging, wrinkles and lines come from lower and often depleted collagen levels as we age, so if you don’t solve the inner problem of increasing collagen production, then you can slap on whatever you want on the outside, it’s still gonna sag. In the same way, when we ‘sag’ in our hearts (our spirit) with fear, anger, resentment, bitterness or even grief, we deplete our joy and faith levels, and you can be sure it will make its way right to our face. Yet God desires an open face with us:

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2Cor3:18

You could say that’s the ultimate ‘face-lift’ to be changed into the same image as God’s glory! Beholding His beauty and receiving what He already has given to us in exchange for our sin, increases our ‘spiritual collagen’!  I want to encourage you today to begin your inner anti-aging routine by presenting your heart to Him, meditate quietly before the Lover of your soul and ask to see the lies so you can repent (just let go and hand them over once and for all to Jesus) and be set free! You will have more joy, peace and openness in your heart, and when that happens, I promise it will overflow to your physical body as well.
